Phoenix Blues & Jazz Sessions

For Immediate Release

First String Announces Community Based Effort to Support Musicians

Arizona based marketing and events management company, First String will launch its newest youth focused musical event, the Phoenix Blues & Jazz Sessions in January 2013.  This event grew out of the notion that musicians- particularly those under age 21- need an environment to support their live performance along with collaborative musical growth.  Its goal is to produce and sustain a Blues and Jazz rich (as well as other styles) event, while cultivating exposure and musical collaboration between musicians of any age and experience level, beyond the typical adult-only scene.

Several years ago, company owner, Buzz Fowler noticed younger musicians showing up at bar and nightclub, open-mic (open stage) and musical jam sessions.  Through conversations with their accompanying parents, he learned that those adult oriented exposures often were the only options for youth, other than school or church.  But even those experiences often did not support ongoing musically collaborative growth.  Not surprisingly either, discussions with club owners and parents also revealed the 21+ venues perhaps were not the best experiences for the younger musicians.  And, although there were a few all-age coffee house open-mics, typically the collaboration aspect was missing.

Through further discussions with parents and community leaders, the all age, collaborative experience concept became a reality. Valley music community leaders, Jonathan Varo, musician and local music instructor with Rhythm N’ Pitch, Maury “Hooter” Saslaff, bassist of “Hooter’s Blues” and “The Hoodoocasters” bands, and “Vanya” Hautimacki, drummer for “The DMV”- a Jazz, Blues, Funk band will join with the singer-songwriter, harmonica musician, Fowler to launch the First String Promotions sponsored event.  This new music scene will be hosted at Tempe’s Olive Branch Restaurant on Sunday afternoons, beginning January 13, 2013.  It will support live, individually creative performances plus open-age collaborative growth, while fostering exposure to legacy Blues and Jazz musical styles.
