  • Thrifty ways to celebrate May

    By Sue Doerfler

    The Republic|azcentral.com

May is the transitional month between spring and summer, when we can still enjoy our patios in the mornings and evenings. It’s the month of horse races and gatherings with friends and family.

Here are three thrifty ideas to help us through the month:

    • The Kentucky Derby is one of May’s signature events. Instead of spending beaucoup bucks on a Kentucky Derby hat, make your own. Purchase a hat at a thrift store or use one of your old hats. Doll it up with netting, faux flowers and ribbons from bargain bins at fabric stores. Have a hat-making party with friends before the Saturday, May 5, race (post time is 3:24 p.m. Arizona time). Get party ideas and recipes, see photos of hats and learn about the competing horses at kentuckyderby.com.

    • National Drinking Water Week is Sunday-Saturday, May 6-12. It’s a good time to remind ourselves that we need to drink ample amounts of water during the hot summer months. “But I get so tired of drinking plain old water,” you say. Try jazzing up glasses of water with cut-up strawberries, slices of orange or a sprig of mint. The flavors will infuse the water.

    • Revamp your patio furniture instead of buying new. If you have metal tables and chairs that are beginning to rust, spray-paint them. Or hide the rust with an inexpensive outdoor tablecloth. Replace faded cushions with new cushions or slipcovers.

  • 20 ways to save in May

    By Sue Doerfler

     The Republic|azcentral.com

Pinching pennies has become a way of life for many of us. During May, we can save on family activities, spa treatments, Cinco de Mayo treats, things to do and Mother’s Day brunch.

    • Discover the science of art conservation

Every month, the free Adults’ Night Out talk at the Arizona Science Center explores a different topic. During May, learn about the Science of Art Conservation: Understanding and Preserving Art through Science. Discover the difference between art restoration and art conservation. See several examples of different research projects that illustrate a variety of scientific analytical techniques that museum conservators employ in order to understand more about the objects that they are working to preserve, such as Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). You can visit the regular exhibits for free. Want to do more? You can also get a deal on the “Van Gogh Alive” exhibit ($11; regularly $25). The event is for age 18 and older only.

Details: 5:30-9 p.m. Friday, May 4; lecture at 7 p.m. 600 E. Washington St., Phoenix. Free (fee for IMAX, planetarium and “Van Gogh Alive”). 602-716-2000, azscience.org.

    • Go fishing with the family

Attend the first Greer Family Fishing Derby on Saturday, May 5. Kids 12 and younger, paired with an adult, will compete in the Kids & Family Fishing Derby from 10 a.m. to noon. The Big Boys & Girls derby, for those 13 and older, is 1-3 p.m. Free breakfast will be served at 9 a.m.; at noon, a barbecue picnic lunch (available for a fee) will benefit the local Boys & Girls Club. Prizes will be awarded for first fish, biggest fish and other categories. The derby is free, however, teams pay by the inch for the fish they keep. An awards ceremony will be held at 5 p.m. Fishing gear can be rented from the Lazy Trout General Store.

Details: Event begins at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 5. Lazy Trout ponds, 38940 Arizona 373, Greer. 928-735-7540, lazytrout.com.

    • Get your antiques appraised

Do you have a vase that was once owned by your great-great-grandmother? A Civil War uniform that’s been passed through the generations? Antiques on Central is hosting a professional appraisal clinic. Pay $10 per item to have your antiques appraised. Furniture is by photo only; no coins or firearms will be appraised.

    Details: 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, May 5. 5037 N. Central Ave., Phoenix. 602-264-4525, antiquesoncentral.com.

    • Celebrate Cinco de Mayo

Hear strolling mariachis, watch salsa dancers and listen to a five-piece Latin band during the Cinco de Mayo party on the plaza at La Hacienda. Sample salsas and order tacos off the restaurant’s street-style taco cart. During happy hour in the bar, get beer for $4, tacos for $5, appetizers for half price and margaritas and tequila flights for $5. Additionally, La Hacienda’s regular menu is available inside the restaurant and on the patio (reservations suggested.)
